No one could accuse Shirley Carter of being overly maternal. After all, she abandoned her own two children when they were tiny. Yet she’s determined to look after little George Trott now that her best friend Heather is dead.
Phil reckons she should just enjoy the time she has left with him before social services or dad Darren takes him away, and for once he’s being sensible as well as selfish. George would have a miserable life with this sour-faced pair (it must be years since they last cracked a smile) and, anyway, just look at how Phil’s son Ben’s turned out. But grief-stricken Shirley isn’t being rational and makes an alarming proposal to Phil.
About this programme
Shirley cannot cope with her grief for Heather and as she tries to cling to memories of her late friend, she is desperate for George to stay with her. Phil is hurt to see how much she is suffering, and tells her he would do anything to make it better - but is stunned by what she requests. Dot publicly apologises at the Vic for accusing Andrew, Jay bitterly notes that Ben seems to be coping well with his guilt, and Janine is suspicious when she sees the nursery equipment Billy has bought.
