There have been a few too many nothingy scenes in The Mentalist lately. So it’s nice to have a couple of good, creepy ones tonight, even if they’re basically parodies of those scenes in The Silence of the Lambs where Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster face off at his prison cell.

Here the auburn-haired visitor is Grace van Pelt and the greying psycho is the CBI’s old foe and cult leader Bret Stiles, played by Malcolm MacDowell (the “brainwasher-in-chief” as Jane calls him). An anti-cult activist has been murdered and the evidence points to Stiles – a little too conveniently for Jane’s liking.

MacDowell’s recurring character always adds a ripe touch – stopping just short of hammy – but it’s Jane who needs to rediscover his mojo.
