Is it really close to 40 years since Paul Weller, and his two equally stroppy mates who made up the Jam, spat out the lyrics to their debut single In the City with an attitude that epitomised the punk revolution?

While many who rode the wave of that revolution disappeared long ago, found out for their lack of musical prowess when things had calmed, Weller has matured into a respected songwriter who improves with age. Tonight, to mark the release of his 11th solo album, Sonik Kicks, the Modfather plays songs new and old and chats to Jo Whiley about his glittering career.
