From the makers of Grand Prix: the Killer Years comes another engrossing but sombre film about motor racing.
The early 1980s were meant to be rallying’s golden era and, seen in the saturated colours of archive film, it has a wonderful sheen. Powerful cars thrashed thrillingly along forest tracks lined with spectators. It was the best of times for the likes of world champion rally driver Ari Vatanen, and manufacturers Lancia, Audi and Peugeot put the pedal to the metal.
But there’s an awful inevitability about what happened next. This beautifully assembled combination of interviews and archive footage is both elegiac and shocking.

The evolution of the motorsport in the 1980s, which saw the relaxation of rules and the emergence of the Group B era. Hugely powerful vehicles including the Peugeot 205 T16, Ford RS200, Lancia Delta S4, Audi Quattro S1 and MG Metro 6R4 reached higher speeds than ever before, creating a surge in the sport's popularity - but also posing an enormous risk to spectators. With contributions by former world champions Ari Vatanen, Walter Rohrl and Stig Blomqvist, plus driver Michele Mouton, ex-Lancia team manager Cesar Fiorio and current FIA president Jean Todt.
