It really is hard to tell where Jim Royle ends and Ricky Tomlinson begins. As the ever-ebullient actor recounts Christmas Day afternoons spent slumped on the sofa with the TV remote control welded to his hand, we’re left in no doubt where Royle Family writers Caroline Aherne and Craig Cash get their inspiration. That’s if Cash can stop corpsing through the scenes he’s shown in. Elsewhere, Frank Spencer experiences a fondly remembered costume malfunction as the Angel Gabriel – “Betty, I’m chafing!”
