The Last Explorers

Series 1 - 3. John Muir

In this episode of a wee treasure of a series from BBC Scotland, Neil Oliver follows the peregrinations of John Muir, the Dunbar-born, US-raised naturalist and writer. In the mid-1860s Muir had a revelation about the place of people in the scheme of nature — in the process losing the devout faith he’d been brought up with.

Moving to California, his wanderlust took him to the awe-inspiring Yosemite valley (where Neil climbs a sheer rock face and is unenthusiastically hoisted up a giant sequoia). Muir’s writings became hugely inspirational to the national park and environmental movements. It’s quietly fascinating, not to mention fabulous to look at.
