Jamie Oliver obviously loves his time in the West Country — and not just because he’s downed a pint of scrumpy.
It’s the way African and Caribbean food cultures have seeped into the local fare that thrills him: Cornish pasties are spiced up to become West Indian patties and a jerk chicken “puts the sunshine back into food”, according to a Jamaican chef.
Jamie’s so inspired he gives a few old favourites a twist himself. His spicy apple pudding — with cinnamon, ginger and molasses — looks fantastic. “It reminds me of school dinners,” he says. Wish I’d gone to his school.
About this programme
5/6. Jamie Oliver arrives in the West Country, and decides to look beyond the usual fare of pasties, Cheddar and cider to find alternative dishes. In Bristol, he visits a traditional Jamaican chef, and joins radio DJ Jules Davis to sample her mother's Guyanese specialities. He also goes foraging for mushrooms, prepares an apple pepperpot pudding using Caribbean spices, and cooks a centuries-old recipe for Bath chaps - otherwise known as pigs' cheeks.
