London is blanketed by a heatwave and Adam is having terrible nightmares in which his éminence grise, the camp archdeacon with the bad comb-over (wonderful Simon McBurney) does unspeakable things in the bathroom. Real life isn’t much of an improvement, when Adam (Tom Hollander) and his long-suffering wife Alex (Olivia Colman) endure the torments of Adam’s pig-tailed tyrant of a goddaughter.
Things aren’t much better in the day job when Adam and his febrile curate Nigel (a great turn from Miles Jupp, who goes all Max von Sydow with a crucifix) are persuaded to perform an exorcism for an old lady (the amazing Sylvia Syms). It’s the usual sweet half-hour and, though the laughs are not hearty, the humour has a good soul.
About this programme
3/7. Adam has trouble justifying his belief in the Holy Ghost - but not spooks - when an elderly parishioner claims her nursing home is haunted. To add to his problems, his own house has been taken over by his visiting god-daughter Enid, who is proving to be a difficult guest.
