Spoiler alert: it’s best not to read this preview if you haven’t seen last week’s series opener yet. If so, you won’t yet know how the writers turned on a sixpence and extricated Patrick Jane from his murder charge in true “and with one bound he was free” fashion.

Such cartoony touches are all part of this show: nobody could mistake it for a gritty dose of social realism. It makes its own rules, and they work: one minute we have the fluttery lightness of a romantic comedy, the next we’re in dark, dark serial-killer territory. It’s a heck of a blend to pull off, but somehow they manage it. This week, Jane sets about getting the scattered CBI team reinstated.
