Rick Stein Tastes the Blues

Rick Stein Tastes the Blues

Review by:
Geoff Ellis

If the raw sound of the blues makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, you’ll want to join Rick Stein on this pilgrimage to the Mississippi Delta. It’s an easy-going travelogue that tells the story of the blues, and visits an almost random sequence of places, learning about the music, racial discrimination and – inevitably – soul food.

In the process, we meet Terry “Harmonica” Bean, Cadillac John and the great BB King, and watch Rick eat ribs and catfish. He doesn’t break sweat and it shows, but what the heck, kick off your shoes, lie back and enjoy. There’s just one thing – you’ll soon need some snacks and something to wash ’em down with.

About this programme

The chef charts how the culinary and musical traditions of the Mississippi Delta have intertwined throughout history, and learns about the people who live along the river's banks. He visits restaurants, bars and famous concert venues to trace the stories of the region's colonial past and the famous musicians who shaped the evolution of the blues.
