Conjoined twins Krista and Tatiana Hogan seem to share each other’s thoughts. Tickle one and you’ll see the other laugh; if one tastes ketchup, the other reacts with disgust. The five-year-olds are joined at the skull — rare enough in itself — but their neurosurgeon Douglas Cochrane has discovered a unique connection between their brains that he calls the thalamic ridge which he believes allows one sister to “feel” what the other is experiencing. Claudia Hammond discovers what these little girls can reveal to us about the nature of conscious experience.

About this programme

Claudia Hammond talks to Nobel laureate psychologist Daniel Kahneman about his ground-breaking approach to economic theory, behavioural economics, and his recent research into judgement, decision-making, happiness and wellbeing. She also explores the case of twin girls conjoined at the head, and what it might reveal about the difference between mind and brain.
