Merlin

Series 4 - 5. His Father's Son

Mark Braxton

One of the truly impressive strings to Merlin’s bow is the ability to attract classy names. Charles Dance, Miriam Margolyes, John Lynch and Frank Finlay are just some of the thesping titans to romp through the fantastical landscapes of Albion. The serene Lindsay Duncan is the latest to join the Camelot club.

Formidable in the Waters of Mars episode of Doctor Who, Duncan here plays the equally intimidating, Boudicca-like Queen Annis, who presents Arthur with his first true test as king in a tale of revenge and responsibility.

A trespassing dispute escalates in a way that incurs the queen’s wrath... and you can see where this is heading. Crone-before-her-time Morgana, who probably has the maxim “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” nailed above her mantelpiece, soon sticks her big, black oar in. And gives it a stir for good measure.
