Thank heavens the war is over because things were getting a little torpid in Downton Abbey. But now peace has been declared, Robert can get down to looking really miserable as he wanders the corridors of his stately home, feeling unmanned and useless (“Do you ever wonder what it was all for?”). Until he spies that new young widowed serving wench. Phwoar!
Meanwhile, Matthew feels a tingling, Lady Sybil has come over all liberated now that she’s been thrown back into the forgotten boredoms of her pre-war life, and evil Sir Richard Carlisle tries to recruit Anna to spy on her mistress, offering to “increase her stipend”. Ah, Anna, that’s what they all say.
One of the many wonderful things about Downton Abbey is the way writer Julian Fellowes signposts every plot development like an airport runway in thick fog. Thus Cora expresses some concern about Spanish Flu, so you can be absolutely certain that NOTHING BAD will happen AT ALL…
