Tales from the National Parks

Series 1 - 1. The Lake District

Geoff Ellis

Most people visit the Lake District to enjoy the beauty of the fells, so why would anyone want to turn it into an adventure park? Mark Weir has re-opened England’s last working slate mine in the heart of the Lakes and wants to run a mile-long zip wire down the side of a mountain.

Richard Macer’s film follows his battle for planning permission, neatly ranging forces of conservation against Weir’s energetic, entrepreneurial spirit, backed by some surprising supporters. It’s sadly overshadowed by Weir’s death in a helicopter accident, testament
to a risk-taking temperament.
