Merlin

Series 4 - 4. Aithusa

onight’s guest actor, James Callis, must have suffered an identity crisis during filming. Not only did he take the lead in a 2010 TV movie about Merlin but also, in the matchless sci-fi saga Battlestar Galactica, he played a character called Gaius.

His chief role here is to come between Merlin’s Merlin and Merlin’s Gaius — as Julius Borden, a visitor to Camelot intent on finding the last remaining dragon’s egg. Merlin, a Dragonlord don’t forget, is only too keen to assist, but the ever suspicious Gaius has issues with the interloper…

It’s a hearty broth of a story, with a stirring, widescreen quest, gigglesome asides (some trousers-down tomfoolery and a bit of shameless subterfuge worthy of Basil Fawlty), a lovely, unspoken ice-breaker between Merlin and his mentor, and a story arc that hits the spot — younger viewers will adore the ending.
