Two of the many ways in which Glee manages to refresh itself indefinitely: bring back old guest stars, and set the characters against each other in competition. Episode two of the third series ticks both those boxes, as Shelby Corcoran (Broadway star Idina Menzel) returns. When she’s not counselling her biological daughter Rachel, or reaching out to her adoptive daughter’s biological mother Quinn (still with me?), she’s setting up a rival choir at McKinley High. Mr Schue is tearing out his buttered-Brillo-pad hair over that, of course, but he’s fighting on another front as he strives to counteract Sue Sylvester’s anti-arts campaign.
Meanwhile, Kurt and Blaine reach the end of their honeymoon period, when the inevitable happens: the two divas audition for the same role.
