Aficionados may not find everything here to their taste, but this selection from the BBC archives proves how adaptable a decent show tune can be. The performances range from the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald swinging her way through Mack the Knife in 1965 to the slightly less reverential Captain Sensible giving an exuberant take on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Happy Talk. In between those polar opposites sit guitar hero Jeff Beck with a tremulous version of Over the Rainbow and Jay-Z with his punchy reworking of It’s the Hard Knock Life.
About this programme
Memorable versions of songs taken from or inspired by musicals. The programme features Ella Fitzgerald singing Mack the Knife, from the Threepenny Opera, Captain Sensible's 1982 chart-topper Happy Talk, a cover of a song from South Pacific, and performances by Jeff Beck and Jay-Z.
