Lapland

It’s Christmas and hearts must be warmed. That’s the rule. So prepare to have that vital organ not just warmed but barbecued as we join the tumultuous Lewis clan on a trip to, yes, Lapland, to visit the actual Santa Claus.

They are a noisy, aggressive bunch, headed by widowed matriarch Eileen (Sue Johnston), who start arguing on the plane before the holiday has even begun. And the squabbles continue as they squash into a tour bus for horrible organised trips in festive hats led by a ghastly guide, Jingle Jill.

Michael Wynne’s script leads us by the hand as everyone finds a redemptive aspect to what starts out as an awful holiday. By the end, we have all Learned Something Important.

About this programme

Festive comedy drama about a chaotic but close-knit Birkenhead family who believe in making Christmas as special as possible. This year looks like being the best yet as they pack their bags for an authentic yuletide in Lapland, complete with huskies, reindeer and hopefully a meeting with Santa himself. But the holiday promises even more than they bargained for - as they soon discover. Sue Johnston heads the cast, which also includes Elizabeth Berrington, Stephen Graham, Julie Graham and Keith Barron.
