Simon Russell Beale, as the fantastically urbane yet ever-so-slightly-shifty Home Secretary, wants Harry Pearce back on side: “We need our best security people now more than ever.” Yes we most certainly do, so why is this the last-ever series of Spooks?
But let’s concentrate on Harry (the super Peter Firth) because this is all about him. Lucas is dead and Harry is rescued from a massive telling-off after the Home Secretary intervenes. He’s quickly back on the Grid at Thames House, deadpan (“At one particular moment I considered gardening” he says of his enforced absence) and wondering why a Russian diplomat and his wife have been spirited into Britain.
It’s classic Spooks; breathless, exciting, but this time with a hint of foreboding. The only jarring note is new spy Erin (Lara Pulver), who looks like she’s drifted in on her way to film a perfume ad.
About this programme
1/6. The team is reeling from Lucas's betrayal, with acting leader Erin Watts keeping things ticking over while Harry is under disciplinary action. But following a tribunal, the head of Section D is quickly back on the Grid, in time to investigate the assassination of a retired spy he worked with in Berlin during the Cold War. Meanwhile, a Russian minister has arrived in London to negotiate a ground-breaking strategic partnership with the UK - and it seems he is the next target for the killer. Peter Firth heads the cast in the final run of the acclaimed spy drama, co-starring Lara Pulver, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Jonathan Hyde, Alice Krige and Simon Russell Beale.
