Even after years on the roads, there’s something about the annual dash for winter cash that brings out the most basic elements of the drivers – and not just in terms of bleeped-out language.

Grizzly Dave is like a schoolboy who’s grown a beard by mistake. He’s new to ice, but not to trucking, so when he arrives in Alaska he’s only allowed to drive under the supervision of a chaperone. “This isn’t a day care centre,” he grumbles.

Rick and Hugh Rowland throw themselves to safety when highway maintenance men use dynamite to blow up beaver dams. Meanwhile, Alex takes a humbler approach. As cracks appear in the ice beneath his rig, he calmly starts praying.
