Watching two people on a long drive would normally be tedious – except this drive is on the treacherous, unpredictable Dalton Highway in Alaska and the people are petrol-head Charley Boorman and comedian Sue Perkins. The result is like Ice Road Truckers with less hair and more laughs.
The pair have the most fun wrestling with the etiquette of using a CB radio: “Hey southbounder! You’ve got a massive load!” says Perkins, before realising how pervy it sounds. The giggles stop abruptly when they get stuck in a drift in zero visibility but there’s amazing camaraderie among the truckers on the road… even if road markings and a Little Chef would be preferable.
About this programme
1/3. Celebrities undertake journeys on some of the most perilous routes in the world. In Alaska, Sue Perkins and Charley Boorman drive along the notorious Dalton Highway, a dirt track originally constructed in the 1970s as a supply road for the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline. The pair struggle to cope with the Arctic conditions and constant threat of avalanches, but receive help from experienced truckers who teach them some unwritten rules for surviving the road's many hazards.
