When Tony Blair was asked to look back at the low points in his tenure as PM, he quipped that it would have caused less outcry if he’d introduced the compulsory euthanasia of pensioners than offering a free vote on the banning of hunting with hounds. Listening to this debate between those in favour and those opposed to hunting, one can see why Blair felt the full force of both parties. Sue MacGregor oversees the argument with dignity, but there are still angry outbursts and even tears.
About this programme
Sue MacGregor recalls the Labour party's pledge to outlaw hunting with dogs shortly after coming to power in 1997, and the wave of rebellion it sparked in rural communities, where many argued the government was attempting to destroy their livelihoods. She meets five people who found themselves on opposite sides of the argument.
