Auf Wiedersehen, Pet

Series 1 - 1. If I Were a Carpenter

A peerless piece of TV history. Not only did this drama of brickies abroad launch the careers of its stars, including Kevin Whately, Tim Healy and Jimmy Nail. But it also confirmed what we already knew of its writers, Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais: superb one-line merchants who could be gritty and poignant when the need arose.

This first and best series from recession-hit 1983 works especially well today, and sees a trio of cash-strapped Geordies forced to find work in Düsseldorf. Like Porridge and The Likely Lads before it, Pet is hilariously honest about the working-class male. Continues tomorrow.
