If retirement used to mean a comfy chair and daytime television, it’s likely to be stacking shelves at the supermarket in future. Unless you are as enterprising as Barry and Sheila who annually fire up their campervan and join a group of similarly footloose pensioners for seasonal apple-picking in Herefordshire. Presenter Steve Carver discovers this is not a job for the work-shy when he spends a week in the little community. Yet still people come from many miles away for the “quiet camaraderie” and to take up jobs that local youngsters won’t even apply for.
About this programme
Steve Carver experiences life as a seasonal apple picker at Tillington Fruit Farm near Ledbury in Herefordshire. For a week in August, he moves into a campervan to join the close-knit community of retired people who spend the summer and autumn working on the site.
