Set up by JFK to improve the US’s image abroad, the Peace Corps has sent 200,000 volunteers to remote parts of the world. Bridget Kendall hears their stories of triumph, disaster, enlightenment and embarrassment.

About this programme

Bridget Kendall visits the USA to meet former Peace Corps volunteers and evaluate their roles as America's `missionaries of democracy'. The organisation was set up by President Kennedy in a bid to bring knowledge about foreign customs to his country and in some way stem the threat of communism.
