About this programme
Jolyon Jenkins meets former members of the Portsmouth Sinfonia. The orchestra sold out the Albert Hall in 1974, despite insisting its members played instruments they were unfamiliar with, and counted the musicians Brian Eno, Michael Nyman and the composer Gavin Bryars among its ranks. The programme explores whether it was merely a prank or a serious contribution to experimental music.
