There can’t be a street market in London that hasn’t had a visit from the New Tricks personnel. In this episode they’re in Portobello Road, straying dangerously into Lovejoy territory as they reinvestigate the death of an antiques dealer.
Back at the station, stoic Sandra is looking all girly and limpid as she stares into the baby blues of an ex-lover (Paul McGann, who seems contractually obliged to appear in every BBC crime drama; see Waking the Dead, Luther). He wants to reignite his old flame and she’s ready like a charcoal briquette.
The entire episode creaks like an arthritic mouse with endless repetition and dialogue that lies dead at the roadside.
About this programme
6/10. Sandra is reunited with an old flame when DCI Larson of the Met's arts and antiques squad asks her to look into the murder of an antiques dealer who was not quite as legitimate as everyone thought. Brian is puzzled by Esther's odd behaviour and her new-found interest in the internet, leading him to think the unthinkable - she must be having an affair. Paul McGann (Withnail & I) and Jesse Birdsall (Bugs) guest star, with Amanda Redman and Alun Armstrong.
