About this programme

An alternative vision of Britain during the 1930s, a decade which, despite some underlying social problems, saw an increase in consumption, general prosperity and an improvement in housing. Using interviews with people who remember that time, the documentary challenges the perceptions that the period was predominantly one of unemployment, gloom and recession.
