Making Tracks

Paul Morley is a seasoned hack: it takes a lot to make him catch his breath, but that’s exactly what he does when he walks into the Basing Street recording studios in west London. Part of it comes from the knowledge of the bands that have recorded there — think Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven and Bob Marley and the Wailer’s Catch a Fire. But there’s something more spiritual about it. Music producer and current owner Trevor Horn, explains that these studios work “in the same way that a cathedral makes a choir sound great.” Listen, and feel the power.

About this programme

Critic Paul Morley visits the Basing Street Studios in Notting Hill, London, the place where acts including Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Grace Jones recorded some of their most famous albums. He is joined by Island Records' Chris Blackwell, ZZT's Trevor Horn and engineer Tony Platt to discuss how the studio contributed to popular music during the 1970s and 1980s.
