Golf isn’t part of the Commonwealth Games, but Scotland needn’t worry about its most famous pastime being overshadowed by the sporting festival taking place in Glasgow later this week. The Open can still pique the interest of even the most hardened golf sceptics.

Now into its third day, the players who have made the cut will know all too well the challenges posed by Hoylake’s wind-blistered links. Tiger Woods lifted the Claret Jug for the third time here in 2006, the first time the Championship had been staged at Hoylake for 39 years.

Phil Mickelson is the defending champion after last year’s victory at Muirfield, the same tournament that saw Rory McIlroy embarrassingly miss the cut. But the young Northern Irishman is in better shape this year, having hit a course record in the Scottish Open at Aberdeen just over a week ago.
