Golf: The Open Championship

2014 Day One

2014 Day One

About this programme

Hazel Irvine introduces live coverage of the opening day at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, where the 143rd staging of the Major takes place. This is only the second time the tournament has been held on this course since 1967, with Tiger Woods victorious here in 2006, but it is another American, Phil Mickelson, who starts this week as the defending champion. Mickelson's victory last year came at Muirfield and was his fifth Major success, as he finished on three-under - three shots clear of Henrik Stenson, and the only player in the field to break par. Conditions on links courses will doubtless have a huge part to play in deciding who is near the top of the leaderboard this time around, and it was Zach Johnson who made the most of his round last year to end day one on top, one shot ahead of Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Mark O'Meara. The field once again includes a number of Major winners, such as recent US Open victor Martin Kaymer, Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose, along with past Open champions Ernie Els, Paul Lawrie and Woods, who is looking to end a drought in the Majors that dates back to 2008. With commentary by Peter Alliss, Ken Brown, Andrew Cotter, Mark James, Phil Parkin, Maureen Madill, Scott Drummond, Rishi Persad and Russell Fuller, and reports by Dan Walker.
