Series 1 - Episode 1

The horticultural world was buzzing about the number of young designers who won medals at this year’s Chelsea, a show usually dominated by established names. So will the more spacious of RHS’s horticultural events follow the trend set by its grown-up sibling?

Hands-on inspiration is at the heart of the event, which opens its doors tomorrow, and in this crowd-free preview we get a glimpse of some of the exhibits including conceptual gardens themed around the seven deadly sins, a celebration of Australian flora, a garden inspired by a bird’s nest and a vegetable plot with sound-producing elements. For a horticultural show famous for having its roots bedded in reality, it’s pretty spectacular.

About this programme

1/3. New series. Monty Don, Rachel de Thame and Joe Swift present the first of three programmes from the Royal Horticultural Society's annual event in south-west London, which features a celebration of 50 years of Britain in Bloom. The team begins with a preview of the show before the gates open tomorrow, with Monty taking a look around the newly planted kitchen garden and discovering what Henry VIII would have demanded for dinner. Joe gets a flavour of the large show gardens and Rachel reveals the winner of the coveted Rose of the Year title.
