Day Three

About this programme

Sue Barker introduces further live coverage on day three at the All England Club, where the second-round matches in the men's and ladies' singles continue, including Casey Dellacqua v Agnieszka Radwanska, Grigor Dimitrov v Luke Saville and Novak Djokovic v Radek Stepanek. The programme on Centre Court last year produced a bizarre set of results, which ensured that all four seeded players scheduled to take to the court exited the tournament, by various different means. Second seed Victoria Azarenka failed to even make it on court and withdrew from her match against Flavia Pennetta, while Ana Ivanovic lost in straight sets to one of the rising stars of women's tennis, Eugenie Bouchard. In the men's draw, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga joined the list of the walking wounded when he withdrew from his meeting against Ernests Gulbis at the end of the third set, and the final and biggest upset of all was saved for last, as seven-time champion Roger Federer was beaten in four sets by Sergiy Stakhovsky. The Swiss star's defeat, along with that in round one of Rafael Nadal, opened up the draw for the likes of Djokovic and Andy Murray, who ultimately took full advantage to reach the final, while the ladies' draw never quite recovered from the loss of so many leading players at such an early stage.
