About this programme
9/16. A look back at the 1982 World Cup, which took place in Spain and saw Italy gradually improve throughout the tournament to lift the trophy for the third time. The Italians failed to win a single game during the group stage, but scraped through to the second phase, where they ended the hopes of a Brazilian side that provided many of the tournament's highlights, as the likes of Zico, Socrates and Eder dazzled the world. England exited despite not losing a match, Scotland missed out on progressing on goal difference and West Germany contributed the unsavoury memories of their controversial victory against Austria and Harald Schumacher's horror challenge on Patrick Battiston, before going on to reach the final.
