About this programme

13/16. A look back at the 1998 World Cup in France, which saw the host nation crowned champions for the first time, and David Beckham rise to prominence for all the wrong reasons. The tournament was expanded to 32 nations, meaning an increase to 64 matches in 10 host cities, and Scotland exited at the group stage despite running defending champions Brazil close in the opening fixture. England lost on penalties again, this time to Argentina after Beckham had been sent off early in the second half, while the final is best remembered not for French heroics, but for the mystery surrounding Brazil's star striker Ronaldo, who played despite being left off the original teamsheet amid rumours of ill health.
