The Crimson Field

Series 1 - Episode 4

Inspector George Gently’s Lee Ingleby guest-stars as Private Wilfred “Dad” Tyrell, one of what he calls the “Lucky 13”, the remaining members of a so-called “pals’ battalion”. Their comrades died in action and Wilfred is fixated on the superstition that the survivors have beaten the odds and will always beat the odds, just so long as they stay together.

As Sarah Phelps’s First World War drama continues, we see a little bit further beneath the cloaks of mystery worn by the volunteer nurses at the tented hospital. Kitty (Oona Chaplin) comes face to face with an unwelcome visitor from her past, while nice matron Grace Carter (Hermione Norris) hides a big secret, something that could ruin her.

But the baddie remains cake-stealing, thwarted Sister Margaret Quayle (Kerry Fox), a passive-aggressive sneak who collects other people’s secrets.

About this programme

4/6. Joan is in agony not knowing whether her fiance is alive or dead - and to make matters worse, Rosalie has seen her ring, and could reveal her connection to the enemy. Her spirits are lifted by the arrival of 13 soldiers from her home town of Liverpool, who are united in the belief that if they stick together, none of them will die. However, it turns out one of them holds a secret that could threaten their safety. Meanwhile, Thomas seizes his opportunity to pursue Kitty, although he may be too late when she is summoned by a mysterious figure from her past, and the return of an old patient causes ripples between Roland, Grace and Margaret.
