Series 1 - 1. Unauthorised Investigation

The Euro-crime slot is steadily wending its way south again from Denmark to Belgium to Italy... Not quite as southerly as Inspector Montalbano in Sicily, but De Luca, set in Rimini, a resort on the Adriatic, has a similar ambling pace and tells its less-than-complex cases in just under two hours.

A series of four films made in 2008, De Luca is set 70 years earlier and has a keen sense of prewar glamour and the Fascist state under Mussolini (a close but off-screen presence). A woman is found shot dead on Riccione beach, close to Il Duce’s seaside residence, and the case is hastily closed, but Deputy Inspector Achille De Luca isn’t satisfied. He’s the handsome one with a tache, grey suit and fedora who gets about on a pushbike.

He pals up with a journalist, Dannunzio (canary yellow jacket and purple bowtie – telltale signs of an anti-Fascist), and falls for the charms of a ravishing blonde countess, who might as well have femme fatale tattooed on her buttocks.
