Tough Young Teachers

Series 1 - Episode 1

In essence this is Junior Doctors: Your Life in Their Hands fused with Educating Yorkshire. We follow six top graduates on the TeachFirst programme, which aims to place inspirational university leavers in schools in low-income communities. The snag is that they’ve only had six weeks of training before they’re parachuted into tough schools, for another two years of on-the-job training.

Anxiety and nervousness emanate from the screen as the newbies prepare to step inside a classroom for the first time. There are mixed results. It’s quite a tense watch as they struggle to find their feet, although you will pick up some interesting new slang.

About this programme

1/6. Six new graduates are thrown in at the deep end as they begin teaching at three of London's toughest schools. Oxford alumnus Charles is sent to The Archbishop Lanfranc School in Croydon, where he comes face to face with 500 students per week, some of whom have only just arrived in the UK. Nick and Meryl are given placements at the Harefield Academy in Uxbridge and are shocked to discover some Year 9 pupils are unable to spell four-letter words. Meanwhile, Claudenia is reduced to tears at Crown Woods College in Eltham.
