Episode 1245. The Countryfile Calendar Year

The Countryfile Calendar Year

Alison Graham

I wonder how many people watch Countryfile simply to see the Weather for the Week Ahead slot, which is always placed tantalisingly near the end of the programme. Such is our relationship with TV weather presentations (see Wednesday’s Timewatch for a history of weather on telly), I bet it’s an awful lot of Countryfile’s big weekly audience. So, this show's weather slot is, of course, new, but a lot of the programme is devoted to re-runs of John Craven’s favourite bits inspired by this year’s Countryfile calendar. He also looks to the year ahead with a visit to the National Trust’s 18th-century Killerton estate in Devon as it prepares for 2014.

About this programme

John Craven looks to the year ahead while also remembering a few favourite items from the past. He visits Killerton, an 18th-century National Trust estate in Devon, where staff are preparing the house, grounds and parkland for 2014. He joins them for lambing, making cider and clearing the woods - turning waste timber into charcoal - and enjoys a well-earned barbecue. He also takes a tour of the home's collection of antique clothing, some of which dates back to the 17th century, and introduces archive items from the past few years, all of which were inspired by this year's Countryfile calendar.
