Series 2 - Episode 6

Radio Times
Review by:
James Gill

Join us on a journey of exploration, a quest to find a hidden truth. No, I’m not talking about what’s underneath Claudia Winkleman’s devil-may-care fringe; we’re about to discover whether The Hobbit sequel, The Desolation of Smaug, is any good.

Alongside Claudia and regular presenter Danny Leigh to talk about this season’s biggest blockbuster is guest critic Catherine Bray. There’s also an interview with a curiously meditative Martin Freeman, who tries to explain what it is about these flights of fantasy that engage people. “It’s not just about hobbits; it’s not just about elves. It’s about us, or nothing. If it’s not about us, it’s not about anything.”

About this programme

6/7. Claudia Winkleman and Danny Leigh are joined by guest critic Catherine Bray to review Peter Jackson's latest chapter in his Middle-earth saga, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, in which Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins) is joined by the voice of his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch - among countless other actors. They also give their thoughts on Israeli drama Fill the Void, about a young Hasidic Jewish woman forced into an arranged marriage with her late sister's husband.
