MOTD - World Cup 2014 Draw

In England at least, this teatime may witness an unusual number of cheers and groans in offices around the country. The ritual will decide who is grouped with whom in the early stages of next summer’s World Cup in Brazil. It’s bound to be a stolidly glitzy affair, like a cross between a South American lottery draw and the scoring in Eurovision. There will be a lot of smiles and awkward pauses, but it will matter.

For Roy Hodgson, a bit of luck here could go a long way. Whatever he ends up with, he’ll put on a brave face, but England aren’t seeded, so a group with, say, Switzerland, Australia and Ecuador rather than Germany, Chile and the USA, would be good. Gary Lineker talks us through the ramifications.

About this programme

Gary Lineker presents live coverage of the draw from the Costa do Sauipe Resort in Bahia, Brazil, as the nations discover who they will face in the group stage of next summer's football tournament. A total of 32 teams will take part in the competition, with the eight seeded sides allocated into different groups and then drawn alongside the remaining countries, with a maximum of two teams from the UEFA zone in any one group.
