Romances on film and TV usually end with a kiss or a wedding, but soap operas know full well that “I do” is only the start of the saga. Roy and Hayley’s courtship and marriage has been 15 years in the telling, but over the last few months we’ve had to adjust to the fact that time is running out.

Tonight, Hayley steels herself for her scan results, but the news is devastating. “This has always been first and foremost a love story,” actress Julie Hesmondhalgh tells RT. “Everything else – the cancer, the right-to-die – is secondary to that. It’s a love story between two people and what we’re seeing now is the end of it.”

About this programme

Hayley tries to take her mind off the consultant's verdict and suggests going to a pantomime, but she ends up breaking down in the queue and lashes out at Roy. Leanne tells Kylie her temper and pride are preventing her from moving on in life, and David is concerned when his despondent wife returns to No 8, while a conscience-stricken Nick makes a decision that has repercussions for his own partner.
