Tim Marlow: Great Artists

Series 2 - 4. Stubbs

About this programme

4/8. The art historian explores the life of 18th-century British painter George Stubbs, whose extraordinary pictures of horses led to his being dubbed a genius. He mastered his craft by buying and studying horse carcasses to better understand their anatomy, but the fashions of the time meant he was initially forced to earn money through painting society portraits. Luckily, the formation of the Jockey Club allowed him to return to the equestrian art he adored.
