In the opening scenes of Anthony Horowitz’s blockbuster drama we see suave, assured defence barrister William Travers running rings around stumbling, borderline-corrupt police officers. Although Travers (James Purefoy) looks like a man in complete command of both his professional and personal lives, as the story unfolds we learn that Something Bad once happened to Travers, poisoning his comfortable world and driving him from a successful London practice to start a new life in Suffolk.
Purefoy is necessarily impassive as Travers, a successful man with a dreadful secret, a man who seems preternaturally clever at keeping his emotions tamped down. Yet Travers is unmistakably rattled when he spots a familiar face on a railway platform.
Despite a leisurely start, in Horowitz's good hands – this man knows how to tell a story – Injustice slowly shimmers into life, throwing out clues and sub-plots and gradually weaving a spell.
