Halloween night and a screenplay by horror aficionado Mark Gatiss: who could ask for anything more? He’s the perfect choice to adapt this atmospheric (and slightly macabre) tale about the investigation into the death of a girl found drowned in an apple-bobbing tub at a village party. Young Joyce had boasted of having witnessed a killing years before and although most dismissed her tale as pure fantasy, Poirot is not so sure.
It turns out there have been a number of suspicious deaths in the area that the girl could have seen, and among the top thesps on the suspect list are Amelia Bullmore, Timothy West and Eric Sykes.
