Without the long story arc of Patrick Jane’s pursuit of Red John, this show would be a lightweight procedural about a smirking pseudo-cop who drinks tea and reads people like books. But it isn’t, because always in the background is the fact that Red John murdered Jane’s wife and child, which adds darker elements, explains Jane’s tendency to callousness and allows Simon Baker to showcase the steelier side to his acting.
Up until now RJ has always been a hidden figure, but tonight, in the second part of the season finale, Jane is closing in on him. First he must unmask the mole within CBI, who could be one of five people: “Don’t worry, I have a brilliant plan,” purrs Jane. Long-term fans should prepare for a shocking, game-changing climax over a cup of lapsang souchong.
