More middle-aged men talking football: anathema to people who find the pundit game incomprehensible; a bubbling source of contention for every fan who believes they could do the job better themselves.
This Football Focus-style discussion show therefore must be ready to bat off criticism. That said, Mark Chapman has proved himself a capable TV anchor following in the footsteps of Colin Murray, with enough dry wit to put whatever brouhaha is dogging the Premier League into perspective.
He should be right at home in this new role too, as the show is broadcast simultaneously on BBC1 and Radio 5 Live. With little actual match action due to rights issues, the format will give him room to tease out the day’s debate without resorting to whizzy graphics.
