Great West End Theatres

Series 1 - 1. Ambassadors Theatre

Ambassadors Theatre

David Brown

With its shots of London streets and slow pans around auditoriums, this comes across as a tourist information video rather than a documentary. Yet it’s saved by the presence of Donald Sinden, who explores West End theatres (this week: the Ambassadors) with mackintosh and walking stick, while offering some typically fruity-voiced anecdotes. He has some impressive talking heads, too, including Charles Dance and Ian McKellen, although none are as entertaining as Steven Berkoff, seen here railing against the use of video screens on stage.

About this programme

1/10. Donald Sinden heads backstage in London's finest theatres, and reveals the history, traditions and colourful characters associated with them. He begins at the Ambassadors Theatre, where the production of Mousetrap began its West End run in 1952.
