The Hairy Bikers: Restoration Road Trip

Series 1 - Episode 3

Gill Crawford

In the final leg of their social history quest, the Bikers arrive at the Llangollen railway in North Wales to coo over a mighty Great Western Railway “Night Owl”, the biggest steam railway restoration project in Britain. They go to a foundry to help with (of course) the casting of the engine’s enormous wheels, working by furnaces as hot as volcanoes. The pair are remorselessly jolly with everyone they meet as they head on to Barnsley to check a disused mineshaft and then to Cambridgeshire where they make scones from flour milled at a huge, water-powered mill. But their highlight is cooking a full English breakfast on a sooty shovel on the footplate of a steam engine.
