It’s a narrative device that’s been used in countless dramas: drive a big wedge through your core team in order to create a cliffhanger, and then pick up the pieces when the series returns.
Yet despite the overworked clichés, Hawaii Five-O uses this ploy to decent effect for its season finale as a showdown with Wo Fat looks like it could spell the end of the end for the Governor’s elite task force.
The catalyst for the ructions that follow is a car bomb that kills a high-ranking aide. Soon enough, Steve McGarrett is in the frame for murder and goes rogue. But while their boss comes over all Jack Bauer, the rest of the squad find their loyalties tested, leading to a whole lot of jeopardy and a whopping To be Continued plastered across the screen.
